Bangkok, the 22nd of June 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: The bomb, built into a local fruit-vendors cart, was remotely detonated by an unknown source. The blast seriously wounded one man, the owner of the cart, who allegedly had no knowledge of the existence of the explosive device.

Forensic Science Division officers and Metropolitan Police collected evidence of a homemade explosive device, found to have been planted on or inside a 15kg gas cylinder positioned on the cart. The radius of the blast was noted as being approximately 20 meters.

The victim of the blast, stated that he had been hired to park his rambutan cart at the front of the Bhumjaithai Party headquarters on Phaholyothin Road, but that he had taken cover behind the building as severe rain began to fall on the area. Consequently party members usually use the rear entrance to access the building, however, no damage or further casualties were reported.

Mr. Anek Singkhuntod [26], the victim, was rushed to the Bhumibol Hospital suffering from serious injuries, whilst his fruit-cart and several nearby office windows were the only collateral damage as a result of the explosion.

Bhumjaithai Party spokesman Supachai Jaisamut revealed that the party’s political alignment and stance could have been the motivation behind the attack. Although stating that the incident was the result of a person/people wishing to incite violence and terror, Mr. Jaisamut stopped short of accusing the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) or Red Shirts for any involvement in the incident.

Consequently, the funeral for Major-General Khattiya Sawasdipol, better known as Sae Daeng, was taking place at the time of the attack. Sae Daeng was an unofficial leader in the recent Red Shirt protests, consequently responsible for the training and management of the Red Guards, the group responsible for surrounding the main Ratchaprasong encampment of the Red Shirt protests in Bangkok.
