The worst serial killer in Canadian history, Robert "Willie" Pickton, 57, who is accused of having butchered 26 women, apparently handcuffed six of the women while they were having sex and strangled them, after which he transported them to the farm slaughterhouse, where he hanged, bled, gutted and skinned the bodies.

Six of the victims, named as Sereena Abotsway, Mona Wilson, Andrea Joesbury, Brenda Ann Wolfe, Georgina Faith Papin, and Marnie Frey, were among more than 60 prostitutes who disappeared in the Vancouver area, over a period covering the late 1980s to the end of 2001.
Pickton apparently hired the women on the streets of the city’s depressed Downtown Eastside neighbourhood, lured them to his farm, using the inducement of money and drugs, murdered them after having sex, and then butchered their bodies, subsequently feeding most of the chopped up bodies to his pigs. Following this, he would mix what remained with animal feed and ship it off the farm.

Much of the evidence came from a casual worker, Andrew Bellwood, who had been employed on Pickton’s farm and was privy to Picon’s confessions while the two watched TV in Pickton’s mobile home. One admission in particular was that Picon was apparently extremely surprised by how much the bodies bled when butchered.

The Defence made much of the fact that at least two of the witnesses had drug problems. Bellwood, for instance, the last major trial witness, had crack cocaine and alcohol addictions and was prone to hallucinations. The hallucination factor was again brought up in connection with Lynn Ellingsen, a crack cocaine addict and friend of Pickton, who gave evidence that she had surprised Pickton skinning a woman suspended from a chain in the slaughterhouse. The Defence Team suggested that Ellingsen, who had been high on drugs at the time, mistook a butchered pig for a woman. Ellingson had blackmailing Pickton as a result. When he was asked why he hadn’t cleaned up the blood of one of his victims or disposed of personal effects, Picton said, “I got sloppy.”

In so far unaired tapes, it is alleged that Pickton confessed to an undercover police officer that he had, in fact, killed 49 women, in all.

Pickton’s defence lawyers are trying to maintain that Pickton was not sufficiently intelligent to have organized serial killings and have asked the jury to pay particular attention to his mannerisms.

However, this is disputed by Adam, who headed up the missing women’s probe, maintaining that Pickton is attempting to act less intelligent than he really is. “You completely stumped the police and made them look like fools all right,” Adam accused him in a 2002 interview.

The current case only concerns six of the 26 murder charges. The judge split the case into two separate trials to enable the jury to handle the overwhelming weight of evidence
