BMW 730Ld = Long German Über Luxury diesel Wagen

“I wanna be a billionaire so frickin' bad...” OK! Let's say I became a nouveau riche, billionaire. What would I buy first? A new car, of course. The Rolls-Royce Ghost with suicide doors? A metallic black (red interior) Ferrari California? Or a cool ice cream yellow Lamborghini “Mad Bat” Murcielago? I don't think so.

This is Thailand. “TiT”. And the car I would buy (as a billionaire) is a vehicle for all seasons; wet and dry. A car with power, comfort, IT compatibility and luxury. The car I would buy? A mineral white, long, sleek diesel limousine – a BMW 730Ld. Total understatement at THB 7,599 million, all inclusive.

Snap out of it! Rewind to reality and the www.pattayadailynews.com BMW 730Ld road test – not as a potential (billionaire) buyer but as an underpaid – overworked motoring hack.

The Bimmer seven series test drive kicked off at the BMW HQ on Wireless road. Destination BMW Rayong Plant where these über machines are manufactured. I get the the backseat first. We’re off. In the rear it’s quiet like in a cathedral and I am immersed in a delicious ambiance of premium hand stitched leather, wood inlays and acres of space legroom, headroom. Including seat ventilation and back massage.

But I wanna be in the driver’s seat. The cockpit. I wanna drive this baby, so bad. But first I have to check out the infotainment system. The LOGIC7 surround sound and the independent 9,2 DVD screens embedded in the back of the front seats. Everything is interfaced: iDrive, Bluetooth the works. Including the thick owners manual all on the 730’s hard-disc.

Here in the upholstered back seat of the biggest BMW, the “7” series flagship, this is as good as it gets. Total automotive luxury. But I wanna be in the driver’s seat. The cockpit. I wanna drive this baby, so bad.

Midway to Rayong before the tollway we swop. Now, I am finally at the wheel. Buckle up. Push the START button! The RPM needle jumps. The three liter turbo engine hums. Then throttle. Achtung! This is not just a de-luxe limousine this is also a high performance sports sedan. The six cylinder, six-speed engine pumps out 160 horsepower. That’s why they BMW Diesel’s are called “torque of the town. 0-100 in 7,8 seconds. Back on the tarmac I am over taking 10-wheel trucks and zigzagging on the motorway with confidence.

Pure joy. The power delivery is immediate and brakes you can trust. Everything is decisive and fast. Soon we exit motorway. And encounter a twisting secondary road with slow Hino container trucks, rickety noodle shops on three wheels yet the 5,2 meter long and 1,9 ton heavy BMW 730Ld handles surprisingly nimbly. So we arrive at the gates of BMW factory. End of the drive.

But I am in the hot driving mood. I want to this drive thing. All the way to across the Eastern Seaboard to Trat-Ban Had Lek and hop across the border and into the 24-hour casino. Roulette, Black Jack, Baccarat and Jack Pot! The price of the BMW 730Ld, again? THB 7,6 million….

“I wanna be a billionaire – so freaking bad…”

P.S. And how thirsty is this long and luxurious diesel beast? Average 15 km per liter. With a full tank that’s all the way to the casino in Trat or Poi Pet and back and with diesel still left in the tank.
