Blindness Slated To Win 61st Cannes Film Festival

This year‘s Cannes Film Festival has 22 films competing for the acclaimed Palme d‘Or (Gold Palm) award. These include Blindness, Clint Eastwood‘s Changeling and Synecdoche New York. Other notable films are the latest Indiana Jones film - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which is screening out of the Palme d‘Or competition and Kung Fu Panda, an animated martial arts-loving bear saga.

A promotional spectacular by voice-over artist, comic actor Jack Black for his Kung Fu Panda, opened the show, with a boatload of 40 people appearing in giant panda suits. Black performed martial arts movements at the Carlton Hotel pier One of the first revelations of the show was Black’s announcement of the “open secret” that co-star, Angelina Jolie, and her husband, Brad Pitt are due to have twins.

As an innovation, this year, the first film screened was the Dark Brazilian drama Blindness, about an epidemic that results in people losing their sight. Julianne Moore and the film’s director Fernando Meirelles promoted Blindness, saying that she wasn’t sure about the choice of Blindness as first screening. Moore declared that “Movies don’t predict, they reflect culture,” she added. “I think we’re reflecting what we’re feeling in our own culture.” She apparently likes parts in apocalyptic movies.

The jury for the Palme d’Or competition is being led by actor Sean Penn, who is apparently hoping for a civilised debate over the award.

Although there are no British entries this year, Hunger, a film by first-time British director Steve McQueen, about the last weeks in the life of IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands will open Un Certain Regard, the festival’s secondary competition.

Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron, whose successes include Harry Potter and Y Tu Mama Tambien, declared “In my case, I’m rooting for the Mexican movie: A Festa Da Menina Morta (The Dead Girl’s Feast)”
