Bangkok, the 14th of June 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Customs officers at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport successfully arrested an Iranian national attempting to smuggle approximately 4.6kg of Ya-Ice into the Kingdom on Sunday.

Appearing on a blacklist of suspected drug traffickers as he passed through immigration at Thailand’s main airport, Mr. Karim Reza Goodarzi [30] was subsequently apprehended after a standard x-ray of his suitcase revealed a large undeclared organic substance present in his luggage.

Instigating a standard search, customs officers were unable to detect what had caused the alarms in the x-ray machine until a custom-made hidden compartment was uncovered in which nearly 5kg of the illegal class-1 restricted drug Ya-Ice was found concealed within. The drugs have an estimated street value of approximately Bt18 million.

Mr. Goodarzi, having already been blacklisted as a suspected drug trafficker, was immediately arrested and sent to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau for interrogation over his dealings in Thailand. He had arrived in the Kingdom on Sunday on a flight originating in the United Arab Emirates capital of Dubai.

Believed to be part of a larger transnational drug network, Mr. Goodarzi was thought to have been attempting to smuggle the illegal narcotics into the Kingdom for distribution in Bangkok. He will now be interrogated further over the crime before being charged with possession and smuggling of a class-1 restricted drug with the intent to distribute, a crime that often carries the death penalty in Thailand.
