Black money, black heart

Not too long ago I was in Bangkok, during that time I was going up there from Pattaya almost every week. On this particular trip I had numerous appointments, which had kept me very busy trying to get from one side of the city to the other.

It was now about 6 o’clock in the evening on Friday and I was over by Soi 3 Nana where it intersects Sukumvit. The problem was I had one more meeting and it happen to be all the way across town, and well out of the range of the BTS, which is always the fast and smart way to get around Bangkok.

So thinking that I had had enough of traffic for one day and considering that Friday at 6 o’clock is about the worst time to go anywhere. I decided to call and cancel, after which I sat down on some steps right by the intersection, to pursue one of my favorite pastimes people watching.

As I was sitting and watching (just glad to not be sitting in some taxi) and wondering where do all these people come from I was suddenly approached by 2 black men. They were very well dressed and seemed decent enough. After a few minutes of conversation, they ask me if they could buy me dinner, in exchange for a little insight into the dos and don’t of staying in Thailand. Sure I said, not one to turn down a free dinner and maybe some interesting conversation.

Well we hadn’t gotten too far into the evening before they laid their whole story out for me. It seems (according to them) that they had just gotten here from Liberia, and now seeing what a wonderful and exciting place Thailand is, they had decided to stay and invest. Which (according to them) would be very beneficial to me, as they needed me to help them find something that might be profitable. And funny they should ask, because I just happen to have such information. At which point I laid out my whole story about how they might go about obtaining said profitable investment.

The dinner ends after much discussion on the advantages of doing business in Thailand and on the sure success we will all have. They are greatly interested in all I had to offer them, and we all agree to meet tomorrow to figure out all the details. I go to bed thinking, this is all to good to be true, but what have I got to lose, they are the ones with the money, so I will ride it out and see where it might go.

I get a call from them the next morning; they ask me to come to their hotel room saying that they need my help with something. I go right over, they are staying at one of the upscale hotels. I have no trouble finding it and go right up to their room.

Here is where it starts getting interesting; they now show me 2 large black cases, the kind you might see in a movie about some bank robbery, the top few inches fold back on hinges, so that it is more like a box then a suit case. They open one up for me and tell me that it contains 2 million dollars US. Looking inside I see stacks of something that is the size as money, stacks of bills bound in the middle with the paper money band. But the bills are all black in color.

Now here is the tricky part, they tell me this money has been disguised so that the U.N. in Africa can transport it securely to locations infested with bandits, and various people who might want millions of dollars in cash. It is now black, and of course unuseable. You might be asking your self about now well why don’t people steal the money, even if it is black, and wash out the black Because (don?t you know anything) in order to wash out the black you must have the super, secret, special (and expensive) stuff.

And guess what They just happen to have one small vial (it is a clear liquid) of the stuff. Getting out a little tray and placing 3 of the black paper bills out of the case on it, then putting on rubber gloves, they pour the contents of the vial on to the bills. After a little swishing, with gloved fingers in the solution, the black washes right out. Instead of black paper there are now a 20, 50, and 100 dollar bills.

Here is the con, they will give me about 400,000.00$ US if I can go to my bank right now and get 10,000.00 dollars (equivalent baht) so that they can buy the solution to wash the money out. After which we will all be very happy, and rich! Yeah and pigs are going to fly! My first reaction was to laugh and then tell them that I would not give them 10 dollars let alone 10,000 dollars. This did not seem to faze them, and they persisted in trying to convince me that this is all the truth. I now thought better about letting them know what I really thought, since I wanted to get out of the room in one piece. So I just played along saying it is not that I don’t believe you,, it is just that I don’t have 10,000 dollars They continued for a good ten minutes, until I made my excuses for having to go, and made an exit.

Once on the street I considered my choices, I could just walk away and be done with it, if I try to go to the police I could be opening my self up for trouble. If I don’t they will find someone who won?t see though it. And I can assume that has already happened in the past, maybe to many people.

My only real choice is to go to the police. So I call the tourist police, they are not too interested, and tell me to go to the nearest local police. I have no idea where to go, so I just go down to the police traffic box on the corner of Sukumvit Soi 4. This policeman is not too happy that I am in his box trying as best as I can to tell him of these terrible criminals that we have to stop. I decide to make sure that he understands me (that might help) and call the tourist police and ask them to tell him. He talks with them on my phone for a couple on minutes, gives me a look, as if to say why me and reluctantly gets on his radio to report.

Three police show up on motorcycles within less then five minutes. And these guys have a much different attitude. They are all high ranking, and one speaks pretty good English. They are very interested in everything I have to say about the black money and I tell them I know where we can find these guys right now. Off we go, with me on the back of one of the bikes.

When we get to the hotel the police tell me to wait outside, they then go in. I wait for maybe twenty five minutes, thinking the whole time, I don?t think I want be standing here when they bring these guys down. But I can?t leave now until I find out if they will need me in order to charge these guys.

Finally the English speaking cop comes out of the hotel, he asks me if I want to be here when they bring these guys down. Is this a trick question I ask him if they need me now, no he says I can go if I want. I chose to get out of there, I think these guys know who turned them in, but no point in advertising it. I go get some lunch, feeling pretty good about my self. So maybe I saved someone from becoming a victim of the black money And all who read this can now be fore warned. If it is something for nothing, it is probably nothing.
