A mass fight had broken out at the New Year’s party of Auto Alliance (Thailand) Co., Ltd., the manufacturing joint venture between Ford and Mazda. More than 4,000 employees were at the party held in a large rented facility.

The fighting reportedly began after the entertainment portion of the evening had finished, and a lucky number drawing began. Several people began arguing near the front of the stage, and then they began fighting.

Witnesses could not initially identify which department or employees started the initial fight. The fighting quickly escalated to the throwing of glasses and bottles. This caused a mass stampede of frightened employees running for the exits.

There were only 10 police officers from the Borwin police station assigned to the party. But the outnumbered officers could not enter the rented hall to stop the fighting because of the huge size of the crowd in chaos. So they waited outside to assist the people escaping from the facility.

Many injured victims were women hit by glasses and bottles thrown at their faces and bodies. They were crying with pain while asking for assistance from the police and the rescue officers.

Employees who escaped with minor injuries were treated by the rescue officers and released to go back home. More than 30 other victims who were seriously injured from pieces of glass were taken to the hospitals, where doctors had to sew the wounds in their faces and bodies.

The rescue officers had to mobilize outside forces of rescuers from Amphur Baan Beung, Amphur Sriracha and Amphur Pluakdaeng to assist the injured people and help transport most of them to the Phayathai hospital in Sriracha.

One of the victims was seriously injured in the stomach by the pieces of shrapnel from the exploding grenade. The doctor had to perform emergency surgery on the victim’s numerous abdominal wounds.

Meanwhile, the police entered the party facility after most of employees had escaped. More than 400 tables of food and dishes were all damaged from the melee.

Police officers later went to Phayathai hospital to question the injured victims. Police are still trying to piece together the information about how the trouble started, and who started it.

The executives of Auto Alliance (Thailand) Co., Ltd. have shown their sympathy for the injured and have visited the injured employees in the hospitals.
