Bangsaen Beach Wants to Ban Styrofoam Boxes

The mayor of Bangsaen has launched a campaign to reduce the use of Styrofoam food containers by vendors. Since Styrofoam is not biodegradable, disposing of the waste is a big problem. Bangsaen now uses more than 50 tons of Styrofoam material a day. The mayor encouraged more use of bagasse plates instead.

BANGSAEN – September 22, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]: at 10 a.m. Mr. Narongchai Khunpluem, the mayor of Sansuk municipality, invited organizations , vendors, and people to join the campaign to reduce the use of Styrofoam boxes and paper dishes, for the safety of lives and to protect the environment.

He hopes to get everyone involved in the community to work together to rally against using Styrofoam plates and cups, and instead use natural material bagasse containers.

Because Bangsaen is a major tourist attraction visited by many people, a growing problem is the increasing use of styrofoam food containers, the mayor said. Currently the Bangsaen community is using 15 tons of the Styrofoam material per day. Mr. Narongchai said the main problem is disposing of the waste. The government currently buries the used Styrofoam in landfills.

The municipality has been working with the Ministry of Environment to research solutions to the problem. But so far they have not come up with effective alternatives. Recycling Styrofoam is not feasible, since that alternative is not cost effective.

Mr. Narongchai said the only immediate and practical solution is to reduce the use of Styrofoam. This would require the help and cooperation from vendors on the beach to quit using foam food containers. Instead, the vendors can use real dishes or disposable dishes made of bagasse. Although the bagasse is admittedly more expensive, it is safer for humans as well as the environment, he said.

In early September, the municipality asked for the cooperation of all visitors and vendors to reduce Styrofoam use. So far the response has been good, the mayor said.
