Bangkok New Year Bomb Suspects Remain Unidentified

Despite Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont’s veiled assertions that Thaksin Shinawatra or his supporters in the Thai Rak Thai Party were the masterminds behind the New Year bombings in Bangkok and other opinion-leaders citing the Muslim insurgents as being responsible, no firm conclusion has been reached in this matter.

The most adept agency, the Department of Special Investigation, armed with the latest surveillance equipment from the West and powers of covert eavesdropping still have not yet identified the suspected bag-toting culprits caught on camera in the shopping centre in Seacon Square on the night of the bombings, according to DSI Director General, Sunai Manomai-udom.

With all the resources available to the DSI and the Metropolitan Police and Crime Suppression Police, the other parties involved in the investigation, no identifications have been forthcoming and no links beyond supposition have been made to any Muslim insurgent groups.

Despite having high-precision imaging technology, the DSI have not managed to obtain a clear definition of the CCTV images, which were indistinct and offer no real help. Outside agencies have been called in to aid the process, but it is unlikely that there will be any news for at least a week.

However, even if the results are clear and the suspects conclusively identified, the public would not be made immediately aware on strict instructions from the CNS (the Council for National Security – as the military junta headed by General Sonthi is now called), Mr. Sunai said.

He further said that only with firm evidence, including eye-witness accounts, would any arrest warrants be issued. Contrary rumours are widespread, as is inevitable in such a non-transparent situation, and many favour the Deep South as being the origin of the bombers. It is considered that, because many people from the Muslim insurgency zone live and work in Bangkok, there is a strong likelihood that the bombers may have been amongst them. But as yet that is all they are, rumours. Only time will tell, and even then it is unlikely that the full circumstances will become public knowledge.
