PATTAYA – February 20,2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; a press conference was held by Pattaya Deputy Mayor Mr. Ronnakit Ekasing to announce the firing of the city municipal worker who was seen on a YouTube video fighting with a local Thai man at Bali Hai pier. The announcement was made at conference room 401 at Pattaya City Hall.

Mr. Ronnakit said his job duties include the direct supervision of the municipal department, and he is sorry the incident ever happened. He has punished the trouble maker who has resigned from his job.

The fired employee was identified as Mr. Cherdsit Boonliang, seen on the video punching, kicking and wrestling with a husky 30-year-old Thai man.

His municipal co-worker, identified as Mr. Nattapong Putsuwarn, was also on the video, but appeared to be trying to stop the fighting. His role in the matter is still being evaluated, and he will be further questioned and examined by the board, Mr. Ronnakit said.

The fight was triggered when a pickup truck driven by the municipal officers backed up into the Thai man’s parked motorbike, causing minor damage.

At the press conference, Mr. Ronnakit insisted all the authorities to work for their duty, and should not quarrel or do anything in public that would disgrace Pattaya’s image.

He said the outcome of the fight and the responsibility of municipal workers will be communicated to all the municipality authorities in Pattaya, from the government officers to the employees and government staff, to reiterate the policy and specify the work procedures to assure consistency of enforcement of any violations.

Mr. Ronnakit also warned municipal officers who have been reportedly accepting bribes from stall vendors and merchants to stop the practice.

There have been complaints received by the Chonburi governor, who has issued an urgent command to investigate the reports, and to fire any city worker or official caught accepting bribes.
