United States, the 7th of August 2010: Eighth seeded Baghdatis blended some wayward serving with his impressive tiebreak composure to ease past Belgian opponent Xavier Malisse 6-2, 7-6 in Washington.

The 25th ranked Baghdatis only landed 43% of his first serves in humid conditions, but was broken only once in his attempts to reach the final. Balancing some deplorable first set serving with five aces, Baghdatis was easily better than the error-prone Malisse who only found form when the game was lost.

“It was a tough one but I played really, really smart,” the Cypriot said. “I played the perfect game to beat Xavier. I played the right shot at the right time. “I kept the ball in the court. I was fitter than him.”

Baghdatis finished the match in a tiebreak, winning 7-4. The win takes his tiebreak success record to an impressive 11-3 for the year. “I’m good at important points,” he said with a smile.

Meanwhile, Argentine David Nalbandian continued his resurgence after having been sidelined for much of the year with a hamstring injury, beating Croat Marin Cilic 6-2, 6-2 in the other match of the tournament.

Opening the match in style, Cilic broke the Argentines serve but started to spray shots wide before dropping the first set in a timely fashion. The second carried on in much the same fashion with Nalbandian converting five of eight break points to setup the tie with Baghdatis in the final.

“He’s a good player,” Argentine Nalbandian said of Baghdatis. “We know each other. We have a similar game from the baseline. I have to keep believing in my game. “I’m playing very well right now.”
