Bad Weather Brings Havoc To Final Day Of The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta

For the first time in the event's history, adverse weather conditions caused havoc on the last day of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, with several boats washed ashore and damaged. This was a disappointing and unhappy end to an event that was otherwise a major success. The awards ceremony will proceed as planned this evening (Saturday).

Phukett, 11 December 2010 (PDN): The last race of the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta was cancelled today after two tropical storms in the China Sea & Indian Ocean brought unusual westerly winds gusting up to 25 knots and turned the 2m swell along the west coast of Phuket into rolling breakers on Kata beach.

This caused havoc for the 100 or so yachts anchored in the bay, and in the early hours of the morning a number of boats, including three King’s Cup series winners, Miss Saigon, Ichi Ban and Team Sea Bees, were washed ashore and damaged. For a while it was virtually impossible for sailors to leave the beach and secure their boats elsewhere. It is an unfortunate and unhappy ending to an otherwise superb regatta and it is the first time in the King’s Cup’s history that a day’s sailing has been cancelled.

The Royal Awards Ceremony and series prize presentations will take place as planned at the Kata Beach Resort & Spa this evening and the final prize-giving and farewell party will be held in the relative shelter of the host sponsors poolside.
