Bad Smell Comes from Factory in Rayong

The governor of Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT) together with the police and military went to inspect Purac factory after local people were falling ill due to the smell and where then sent to hospital.

RAYONG – June 9, 2014 [Pattaya Daily News]; the journalists were notified from the local people that reside around Asia Industrial Estate, Tambon Ban Chang, Amphur Ban Chang, Rayong province, that a smell which is similar to durian was coming from a factory which was making them dizzy and also gave them a tight chest and struggled to breathe so they had been sent to Mabtaphut hospital.

 

Dr. Surathin Maleehuan (Director of Mabtaphut hospital) said that some local people had complained about a bad smell which was coming from a factory who had been sent to Mabtaphut Hospital. Upon questioning the 5 patients, they said that the smell was similar to durian and was coming from a wastewater treatment pond. The smell made them dizzy and caused a tight chest which made it difficult to breathe.

 

At the same time Dr. Weeraphong Chaipherm [Governor of Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT)] went to the area of Mabtaphut Industrial Estate, Amphur Mueang, in order to find the cause of the smell which had caused 300 people to evacuate to Mabtaphut Municipality stadium on the night of June 7, 2014. Then the governor of Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand together with Mr. Pheerawat Roongrueangsri (Deputy Governor of Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand), Mr. Pratheep Engchuan (Director of Mabtaphut Industrial Estate), Mr. Thada Soonthornphat (Director of East Hemarach Industrial Estate, Asia Industrial Estate) and Mr. Jamras Nenthong (Director of Port Authority of Mabtaphut Industrial Estate) and the military officers went to inspect a wastewater treatment pond of a factory called Purac factory (Purac (Thailand) Co., Ltd., address 3 Moo 2 Tambon Ban Chang, Amphur Ban Chang, Rayong province.

 

Therefore, the officers entered the factory in order to inspect the wastewater treatment pond and Mr Phiboonwit Koobkrabi (the factory manager and the executive) assisted the officers whilst they inspected it which was a closed system. But the officers still can’t find the source of the smell which has also been described as a sulphur or an insecticide so an air sample has been taken which will be tested in a laboratory to find is source.
