Bad Karma Catches Up to Diving Thief In “Forgiveness Well”

A man who illegally poached for shells and fish in a “well of forgiveness” used for religious rites at the Baan Bang Saray Institute was found dead at the bottom of the well. Police suspect that drunkenness and a leg cramp led to his demise. However, his relatives believe that what really killed him was the revenge of the spirits of the dead animals.

SATTAHIP – July 23, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]; At 1:30 p.m., Pol. Lt. Col. Pornchai Kingsawat, investigating officer, Na Jomtien police station, Amphur Sattahip, Chonburi province, was notified that a man drowned and died in the well of fishing of Baan Bang Sarey Institute, a religious site for people to practice the dharma, located at Moo 12, Tambon Na Jomtien, Amphur Sattahip, Chonburi province.

He rushed to inspect the scene of the incident, a large well about 30 meters in diameter and 15 meters deep. Near the well, police found a plastic tank with many kinds of shells inside, and a bottle of 30 proof liquor.

Frogmen from the rescue unit Sawangrojjanathammasathan Sattahip foundation dove into the well, and after 30 minutes found the body of the man at the bottom of the well. He was shirtless and wore only black underwear. There was no evidence of a crime or murder. The victim was identified as Mr. Jan Srimak, 57, a fisherman, at address number 12, Moo 6T, ambon Nernmakok, Amphur Bangmulnak, Pichit province.

During questioning, the monks who stayed in the institute said that the well is the forgiveness area for people to release aquatic animals to perform a ritual. They said Mr. Jan always came while the monks were praying or having lunch, in order to secretly catch shells and fishes to eat and sell. But other people who came to perform the ritual had continually warned Mr. Jan to beware of the dead aquatic animals, who will get revenge for his bad karma and take his life, but Mr. Jan didn’t believe them.

Pol. Lt. Col. Pornchai Kingsawat, investigating officer, Na Jomtien police station, said that the cause of death might come from Mr. Jan drinking too much liquor, then later suffering a leg cramp while he was diving in the well, resulting in his drowning. The police sent the corpse to perform an autopsy to find the exact cause of death, before allowing his relatives to pick up the body to perform religious rites.
