RANONG – December 26, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]; a report of a citizen’s arrest being made of a thief in the middle of Lang market was received by police at the Muang Ranong police station.

The police went to check the scene, and found a lot of people crowding around to see what was going on. Police discovered that a 50-year-old Burmese woman, identified as Mrs. Shumiah, was detaining a 24-year-old Burmese woman, identified as Ms. Sa. When she saw the police, the older woman asked police to arrest Ms. Sa for stealing.

Mrs. Shumiah explained that she works as a maid in a house in Muang Ranong. Recently while she was shopping in the market, she had encountered Ms. Sa, who had come from Moh Lamyai to find work in Thailand.

So Ms. Shumiah helped the young Burmese woman get work as a house maid in the house of her employer. But Ms. Sa only worked one day, and later that night stole items from a fellow Burmese worker in the same house. Ms. Sa then packed her things and climbed the wall to escape on December 25.

The day after the incident, Mrs. Shumiah got a ride home by a taxi motorbike, and when they were passing the marketplace, she suddenly spotted Ms. Sa. Mrs. Shumiah quickly jumped off the motorbike and captured the young thief, which startled the nearby merchants and shoppers.

After Ms. Sa’s arrest, the Burmese victim who had her things stolen came to testify. She confirmed the stolen items were all hers, even the clothes that Ms. Sa was wearing. Police informed the suspect that she will be charged with stealing property at night.
