August 13, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]: At report from the Amir-al Mu’minin Foundation states that 7,400 children have been registered at their foundation, but not all the children who need help have been assisted. However, the foundation has sent staff members to meet the families of orphans to comfort them. But the foundation has been severely hampered in its outreach programs due to lack of money. Its education budget has only 120,000 baht.

Ms. Petdao Tohmeena, director of 16th Mental Health District, said that more than 5,000 orphans are registered with the Health Ministry, victims from the violence in the three border provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat. The ministry is helping the children by comforting them and paying their allowance.

But Ms. Petdao is certain that many more orphans remain outside the system, who are not being helped mentally or financially. She urged authorities to create a system to help and support them, such as forming a government Safety Subcommittee to look after the orphans.

Mr. Chaiyong Maneerunsakul, consulting Council of Administration and Development of the Border Provinces, said that the Council had discussed the topic of 3,000 orphans who were not being helped by the government bodies. He said the stranded children face the danger of being “brainwashed” into eventually serving whatever warring faction takes care of them.

Mr. Chaiyong proposed that The Southern Border Province Administration Center (SBPAC) start tracking down the orphans to find them. Efforts should be made to reach families in isolated and distant areas, no matter how difficult the access, in order to provide comfort and support the children mentally and financially, he said.
