SRIRACHA – December 31, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]; a report of a drowning victim was received by Pol. Lt. Col. Sukit Hemra, inspector police on duty, Sriracha police station. He rushed to inspect the scene with the rescue officer of Sawangpratheeptharmmasatharn Sriracha foundation.

The incident occurred at Bangphra beach, Moo 2 Tambon Bangphra, Amphur Sriracha, Chonburi province. The victim was discovered floating in the water by his Laotian girlfriend. He was identified as Mr. Hakkinen Arikalervo age 57, nationality Austrian.

He was wearing only iron-rust color pants. Officers arriving at the scene retrieved his body from the sea. They estimated he had been dead for about an hour. They did not find any wounds or injuries on his body.

Police questioned Ms. Nonglak Bootsamphan, age 35, from Laos, who said she is the Austrian’s girlfriend. She told police that she had persuaded her boyfriend to sit and relax with her at Bangphra beach for the New Year festival.

So they sat to eat food and drink beer at the beach. Then her boyfriend wanted to go swimming. She then asked the waiter to bring a pair of swimming shorts that they could buy for the Austrian. But her boyfriend didn’t want to wait, so he walked into the sea to swim

Ms. Nonglak later saw her boyfriend floating calmly in the sea, so she walked to the toilet. But when she came back, she saw her boyfriend was still floating in the same position. So she thought something unusual had happened to her boyfriend. She went into the sea to check on him, and found that he had died.

The police initially assumed that the Austrian had drank a lot of beer, and then when he went swimming afterwards, he may have gotten a cramp and fallen unconscious and drowned.

However, the police released the body to rescue officers to send to the police hospital for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The Austrian’s relatives will also be notified to pick up the body and perform religious rites.
