Pattaya, the 4th of May 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Although conditions were not as good as Mondays racing, a steady wind ensured that the final day of racing was as competitive as ever. The Ray Roberts skippered ‘Evolution Racing’ took home top honours after a late charge by Matt Allen’s ‘Ichi Ban’ with ‘The Ferret’ winning the Platu Coronation Cup in a close run battle with ‘The Fox’. The win for Australian Ray Roberts (Evolution Racing) means he will be crowned Asian Yachting Grand Prix champion with one more event to go in the series.

In a bid to overhaul the dominance of ‘Evolution Racing,’ Matt Allen led a change of tactics for his ‘Ichi Ban’ team which was evidently successful, helping them to a win in two of the last three races on corrected time. However it was not to be as ‘Ichi Ban’ eventually succumbed in the final race of the event which was resoundingly won by series winners ‘Evolution Racing’. IRC Racing 1 series standings finished: ‘Evolution Racing’ (8 points), ‘Ichi Ban’ (9 points) and the Robert Van Paridon skippered ‘Tantrum’ (20 points) in third.

The IRC Racing 2 category was easily won by the ‘Royal Thai Navy 1’ crew who took an insurmountable lead into the final day before winning the last two races to further establish their dominance of the event. The IRC Racing 2 series standings finished: ‘Royal Thai Navy 1’ (6 points), ‘El Coyote’ (15 points) and ‘Dynamite’ (19 points).

The IRC Cruising class remained a tight affair into the final day of racing with conditions favouring the Tim McMahon skippered ‘Reef Knot’ who took first ahead of series winner ‘Melissa.’ ‘Souay 1’ finished in third to carry on their consistent form at the event. Series standings ended with ‘Melissa’ (10 points) in first ahead of ‘Reef Knot’ (13 points) and ‘Kirafiki’ (13 points). ‘Reef Knot’ finished ahead of ‘Kirafiki’ on count back.

‘Thor’ (11 points) continued their dominance of the Ocean Multi-Hulls event winning the series ahead of Bob Garner’s ‘Blade Runner V’ (19.5 points) whilst ‘Sonic’ (20 points) took home third place. The Sports Boats class went true to form with two more wins today for ‘Porn Star’ (Kipsan Beck). Final series results have ‘Porn Star’ (6 points) with a clean sweep from ‘Vino’ (Ray Waldron) (12 points) in second.

Going into the final day of the Platu Coronation Cup, ‘The Ferret’ (18 points) held a slender one point lead over ‘The Fox’ (19 points) following their disqualification in Monday’s race. Tight racing saw both teams push their vessels to the limit with ‘The Ferret’ eventually coming off as series winner after a drag race style finish in the final race. The Thai skippered ‘Naiad’ (27 points) finished the series in third.

The 2010 Top of the Gulf Regatta with 246 boats was deemed a resounding success by all 600+ participants. Headquartered at Ocean Marina Yacht Club and now in its sixth year, the Top of the Gulf Regatta is the only multi-class regatta of its kind in Thailand.
