Astute Army Dog Outwits Thai Bag Snatcher

After being informed of the bag snatch in front of the Sattahip Navy Base on Sukhumvit Road, at 2.00 pm, Police Colonel Suppapee Bunkrong with his team, consisting of Police Lieutenant Colonel Siamrat Roongreung and another five officers with an army dog, rushed to the crime scene. There police found the Sawang Rojanatam Rescue Team giving first aid to Messrs. Kawee Petch-ngahm (22) and Watcharachai Soisiri(17) , both sons of the bag snatch victim, Mrs. Supawadee Suksawat (39).

Mrs. Supawadee told police that she had been riding her motorbike on the way to work at Lotus, Sattahip. Her sons were riding another bike in front of her. Suddenly, a bike approached her at speed and the rider grabbed her bag. She immediately shouted for help to her sons in front, and reacting swiftly, Mr. Kawee, the rider, decided to crash his bike into that of the thief, causing both bikes to fall to the ground. They then began fighting, and the snatcher pulled out a knife, but decided discretion was the better part of valour and ran away to hide in a bush nearby, leaving his black Suzuki motorbike behind as evidence.

Ten officers searched unsuccessfully for the thief, and it was only when the female army Labrador dog was called in that he was caught. The dog had found Mr. Wichai (Jae) Noojit (34), the bag-snatcher from Udornthani, hiding in the bush. Police took him to show to Mrs. Supawadee, the victim, who was able to identify him as the snatcher.

Mr. Wichai confessed to the bag snatch, and told police in mitigation that he had recently had a fight in a restaurant in Sattahip Market because the person who he had beaten up had told his wife that he’d had an affair with a waitress in that same restaurant. Because of this, his wife packed up and left him. As a result of the fight, he had been sued for attempting to kill the informer. Since, he’s been out on bail, but decided to escape to the south, so he needed money. Hs attempt to obtain these funds, however, was thwarted by the army dog, resulting in Mr. Wichai being arrested and facing prison sooner than he thought.
