SATTAHIP – October 17, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]; the arrests of 7 nonconformist monks and novice monks for drinking liquor and consuming amphetamines at a well-known Jomtien temple was announced by Sattahip sheriff Mr. Pawat Lertmookda; along with Pol. Col. Chonnapat Nawalak, Superintendent, Sattahip police station; Pol. Col. Sathien Boonkham, Superintendent, Na Jomtien police station; Mr. Krissana Yusuk, Senior sheriff; Mr. Chawat Thepthup, Deputy of Stabiltiy Division; and Special Operation Officers of the Center of Fighting Against Drugs.

The seven suspects were identified as monk Yutthakarn Baansaen or Ad, age 28; monk Pakkarakorn Sotthip or Ball, age 28; monk Chusakul Phirathong or Sarm, age 27; monk Chantachai Yodphut or Boom, age 23; monk Suppharerk Teawna or Tee, age 20; novice monk Krissada Thongkham or Mai, age 19; and novice monk “Dam” (alias), age 14.

The police seized immoral items in the parsonage such as liquor, 25 obscene CDs, equipment to consume amphetamine and ya-ice, a woman’s bra and underwear, and knives and guns.

Police also found the clothes of ordinary people that the nonconformist monks and novice monks used to change clothes at night to travel to the entertainment center.

Sattahip sheriff Mr. Pawat Lertmookda described the events leading up to the 3 a.m. arrests of the monks. Earlier, police had set up a checkpoint to inspect passing vehicles after mobilizing forces between three organizations dealing with the crime and drug problem in Jomtien.

The police checkpoint was set up on Sukhumvit Road at the Nong Jabtao red-light intersection. Police then saw two novice monks riding a 3-wheeled motorbike, so the police stopped and inspected them. They discovered that the monks were drunk, so they subjected them to urine tests, which tested for violet urine, showing the monks had consumed drugs.

So the police investigated further until they found out the temple the novice monks belonged to. The police contacted the abbot of that temple before sending the police team to inspect the parsonage.

At the temple, the police found a gathering of five monks who were consuming amphetamines and drinking liquor with three women between the ages of 18-25. So the police restrained all of them, but the three women escaped into the darkness of night. Police searched the parsonage and found many immoral items that they kept for evidence.

The arrested monks were sent to the abbot to have them leave the monkhood immediately. Then the suspects were sent to the investigation officer of Na Jomtien police station to prosecute further according to the law.
