Mr. Chirochi, who was carrying 3.5 million Japanese yen, had not contacted friends or family since arriving in Thailand. Mr. Sasaki was arrested on 18 December 2007 for possessing eleven cartons of illegal cigarettes. Police also found a notebook computer and 3.5 million yen in his house.

On the morning of 17 January 2008, police exhibited the suspect, Mr. Sasaki Toshihiku, to a large group of Japanese and local reporters. Later, at 2pm, Police Colonel Nopadol Wongnom announced that the body found in Sattahip, last month, was Mr. Hirochi Nagarono, according to DNA testing. At this point, the prime suspect is Mr. Sasaki, who still denies any connection with Mr. Chirochi’s murder. Although he is staying silent, police obtained a warrant from the court to arrest him and have charged him with murder.

The alleged perpetrator, Mr. Sasaki, was clad in a Nicky T-shirt and looked very forlorn. However, he still denied any connection to the murder of Mr. Chirochi, whom he says was his friend. He said he had no reason to kill the victim.

According to Chonburi Commander-in-Chief, Police Major General Bundit Khunajak, on 14 December 2007, the suspect, Mr. Sasaki, rented a Toyota Vios, license 6109, Chonburi, from Mr. Sutep (Tee) Piyabupachat (51), who runs a car rental agency opposite Top Supermarket, in Central Pattaya. Mr. Sasaki paid extra money for Mr. Sutep to install dark film on the car windows.

Mr. Sasaki drove the car to Suvarnabhumi Airport on 14 December to pick up Mr. Hirochi. He told his wife, Miss Issaree (Nok) Wantanee that he had to go to Japan on 15 December 2007. However, he returned to his house on Soi Wat Boonganjanaram on 15 December with Mr. Hirochi’s belongings.

Authorities believe that they have a strong case that Mr. Sasaki murdered his friend, Mr. Chirochi Nagarono. Police theorized that the victim was given drugs which rendered him unconscious and that his head was covered with a plastic bag during the trip to Pattaya from the airport. The victim’s body was thrown into the bushes in Plutaloung. Police added that they are waiting for DNA results from the cigarette butts that were strewn around the area where the victim was murdered.
