Are Girls Today More Naïve Than They Were 20 Years Ago?

Watching TV, reading the papers etc, it might be thought that the teenage girls of today are highly influenced by teen idols such as like Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan. What antics these celebrities get up to inspires the wannabe attitude and all the young girls to rush off to emulate them like crazy. Sex figures high on the agenda according to 84% of those polled in a recent poll in Newsweek, even more than it did in the 70’s. Another 70% reckoned that the influence of sexuality was more detrimental than beneficial.

So are young teen girlies galloping around hot to trot? One lady in Los Angeles has a nice term for the teeny-boppers, she calls them “prosti-tots”. They don tart-apparel, sport designer handbags, and are all illiterate. They have also been known to put out to buy the latest mobile phone, Ipod or some other trendy fashion accessory. This even extends to university students at Oxford, so it’s not confined to the States, or to illiterates.

This aside, in the US, the average age for first time sex is still 17, just as it was 20 years ago; so no radical change there. It’s in teenage pregnancy figures that the real change has occurred. And it’s radically dropped. A reduction of 35% in teenage pregnancies on a similar survey conducted in the 1990 by the Center for Disease Control. Teenage girls have likewise shown more moderation in drinking, smoking and overall drug use. These trends, too, have substantially fallen off in recent years, according to figures published by the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan.

So despite the bad example set by teen-idols, the teenage girl doesn’t appear more permissive or rebellious, quite the opposite. Conservatism seems to be gaining the upper hand, once more.

This is not to say that teen-idols don’t have an effect on their admirers. Teenage girls appear impressed with the clothes worn by Britney Spears et al and also the boyfriends chosen by them. They admire the high life lived by them, but not necessarily when they have to have forced detox, or rehab, or get jailed for motoring offences. Then they just laugh at them. An opinion cited by a 17 year old girl at a New Orleans High School.

Mark Kuzniewski, Principal of Aptakisic Junior High in Buffalo Grove, Illinois concurs with the teens, “We certainly don’t see our girls clamoring to get to downtown Chicago to the clubs,” he maintains.

Another teacher, this time a fifth-grade teacher in suburban Chicago says that although many girls may be impressed by Britney’s clothes and dance moves, her students “can’t understand why Britney would wear no underwear.” Old-fashioned morality once again takes over when the girls declare that Britney is a “hootch,” that is a slut.

In Thailand, whilst there may have been a revolution in teen perspectives in that they are becoming much more open than 20 years ago, still the prevailing opinion favours safe sex and moderation, despite the prevailing opinion that many girls are having sex at 15. However, there are no droves of young girls flooding into the bars in Phuket, Pattaya or Bangkok. Just the normal flow.
