Aou Pai Power Substation Transformer in Sriracha Explodes

A transformer of Aou Pai Power Substation in Sriracha exploded causing a fire. The local people evacuated the area due to the loud sound of the explosion and the clouds of smoke. The explosion did not affect the power distribution as the exploded transformer had not been installed to the power system.

Sriracha, August 8, 2011[Pattaya Daily News] ; Pol. Lt. Col. Rungroth Changswet, Lamchabang Police was informed of the explosion and the fire of the transformer at Aou Pai power substation in Tungsukala District, Sriracha.

Six fire engines from Lamchabang, Sriracha and Chaopraya Surasak district went to extinguish the fire of the 300 MVA transformer. Due to the severe fire, the fire fighters could not use water to extinguish the flames so they had to used foam instead. It took them more than 40 minutes of extinguish the fire.

Mr. Chaitanun Wanraweewat, Chief of Aoa Pai Power Substation, said that before the incident, the officials tested the new transformer by charging power to it. This resulted in the explosion and fire. However, the explosion did not affect the power distribution in the area as the exploded transformer had not been installed to the power system and Aoa Pai Power substation had enough transformers to distribute the power. An official investigation will be conducted to evaluate the damage. The exploded transformer costs about 50 million THB. The insurance will cover of the damage of the transformer.
