Another Statistic on Jomtien Beach Road

Tourists are horrified by the number of accidents which occur in Thailand. Pattaya City Hall is well aware of the problem and is considering solutions, but what really needs to happen is a complete re-education of Thai drivers to bring them up to acceptable standards, thus reducing the currently horrendous accident death rates.

Yet another motor cyclist fell victim to the heavy traffic along Jomtien Beach Road recently. Whilst Pattaya residents accept this as a regular daily event, visitors and tourists, such as the two elderly overseas ladies pictured in our photograph, find this quite horrifying. This would leave many visitors with less than the best of memories of their magical holiday time in our city of Pattaya.

This sort of serious accident is virtually becoming a daily occurrence along this busy thoroughfare, and most of it is caused by speed and/or the heavy traffic congestion. Holidays and week-ends are particularly dangerous, as there is always a large influx of visitors from Bangkok and other areas out of town, who come down to enjoy our beaches. These visitors, for the want of a better location, choose to park on the curb of Jomtien Beach Road, and this restricts the flow of traffic even further.

Our Pattaya City Hall officials are well aware of this problem, and plans have been on the drawing board for a “Second Road,” which will see the construction of another road, that will be parallel to the existing Jomtien Beach Road, but set back several hundred metres from the foreshore. It is likely that these roads will be converted to one way traffic flow, which has proved highly successful in Central Pattaya. With planning being in the final stages, the only question that remains unanswered concerns the expected completion date of this very important project, which will undoubtedly save lives and make life easier for everyone.
