Pattaya, the 17th of August 2010: At approximately 12:00, Captain Somchai Chakknanukoon (Pattaya Police Investigator) was notified of a theft at the Wat Chai Market in South Pattaya, opposite the Moon night Hotel. At team of investigative officers were immediately dispatched to the incident.

On arrival, police observed a group of angry local residents and street vendors gathered around the entrance to an apartment building on South Pattaya Road. Allegedly a thief had run inside the premises having stolen something from a local clothing vendor at the Wat Chai Market.

Several witnesses including the victim, Mr. Suthat Thabthimsai [21], explained that a ladyboy had stolen a mobile phone (Blackberry 8900) from a local clothing stall, before fleeing into the apartment building. Mr. Thabthimsai told how immediately following the incident a group of locals including several vendors pursued the offender to the premises before blocking the entrance and calling authorities.

During subsequent investigations, officers found Mr. Chanathep Sa-ad [22] from Ratch-Buri, hiding in the room of his friend on the 3rd floor. In an obviously drugged and/or intoxicated state he initially tried to claim his friend was the thief before police escorted him down stairs to be identified by the victim.

Under interrogation, Mr. Sa-ad explained that he was unemployed and working as a prostitute on the streets of South Pattaya and Beach Road. He declared to have stolen the mobile phone because of the opportunity to make some money from its sale. Mr. Sa-ad was then arrested by authorities, with urine tests confirming suspicions that he was under the influence of methamphetamines.

Police have now charged Mr. Sa-ad on theft and drug usage charges, while he has been remanded in police custody awaiting further judicial proceedings.
