Ammonia Gas Leak at Ice factory Causes Health Concerns

An unexpected leakage of ammonia gas from an ice factory caused local residents to vacate their homes after suffering from breathing difficulties and itchy eyes yesterday.

Sriracha, 18th January 2011 [Pattaya Daily News]: At approximately 10.00 a.m., Mr. Priawpan Singthongchai, assistant district minister for Sriracha, the authority of industrial office’s for Sriracha, a ‘diseases of mobile surveillances’ research team, and the provincial health office went to inspect the ice factory ‘Suksawat’, located on the 9th km of the road Moo 3 Surasak, Sriracha, Chonburi after reports of a leakage of ammonia gas that contaminated the open air in and around the village of Udonsuk, which led to the local residents having to vacate their homes.

The investigations showed the ammonia gas leakage was caused by the processing of ice which, as well as giving of a strong and pungent smell, caused the residents discomfort in the form of tightening of the chest causing breathing difficulties and itching eyes.

The factory was ordered to close temporarily until their machinery is repaired, after which a further inspection would take place three days later, before being allowed to re-open. The nearby nursery school has been closed for one day as a safety precaution due to the possibility of ammonia still in the atmosphere which could have an effect on the childrens health. Parents who had heard of the incident collected their children earlier.
