American Woman Kills Pregnant Woman And Cuts Child From Her Womb

A 23-year-old woman of Laotian descent from Kennewick, Washington, described as being severely mentally disturbed, stabbed a pregnant woman to death and cut the child from her womb, on June 27, 2008. The assailant later tried to pass off the new-born baby as being her own.

The accused murderer, Phiengchai Sisouvanh Synhavong, called emergency services on June 29 in Kennewick, Washington, USA, after the attack on 27-year-old Araceli Camacho Gomez, who was two weeks away from giving birth, maintaining that she’d just given birth in a J.C. Penney parking lot and her baby boy was dying. When emergency crews arrived some time later, they found her in a car holding part of an umbilical cord with the new-born baby boy on backseat of her car.

Upon searching her bag, later, blood-soaked gloves, a box-cutter, bloody paper towels, yarn, a baby bottle and baby socks were found by police, in addition to what court documents described as a ‘significant amount of blood and pieces of human tissue’ in the back seat of her car. The supposed mother and newborn were subsequently taken to Kennewick General Hospital, where a medical examination revealed she had not actually given birth. Previously, Phiengchai Sisouvanh Synhavong had apparently told a friend that she was 9 months pregnant, which was easy to believe due to her corpulent condition.
The body of the actual mother, Araceli Camacho Gomez, was subsequently found on Saturday, June 28, in Columbia Park in Kennewick, 360km south-east of Seattle.

The woman had been bound with yarn, had suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest, which was the cause of death, and a massive trauma to the abdomen, with evidence that a foetus had been removed. The child is currently in a critical condition on life support at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane, Washington.
Police believe Synvahong originall y met Ms Gomez on a bus and promised to give her some baby clothes. She then tricked her way into Ms Gomez’s home and later into getting into her white 4×4. After that Synvahong is believed to have kidnapped the 27-year-old mother of two. Synhavong then apparently bound and gagged her victim before using a craft knife to slice open her stomach. It’s uncertain if Ms Gomez was killed before the baby was cut from her womb or if she still was alive at the time.

Synhavong was subsequently arrested and appeared in court on June 30, and is due for a further appearance, today, July 2. If convicted, she could face the death penalty.

The murder of Araceli Camacho Gomez is not an isolated case of one woman killing another to steal a baby from her womb. In December 2004 in Kansas, 36-year-old Lisa Montgomery confessed to strangling 23-year old Bobbie Jo Stinnett, cutting her baby from her womb and then telling her husband she had given birth. In another horrendous case, 23-year-old Jimella Tunstall was murdered by friend, Tiffany Hall, who cut her baby from her womb. The infant died, but was passed off as Hall’s own and was later given a funeral. To compound matters, Hall picked up the three older children from their father’s a few days after the murder of their mother and then drowned them, subsequently stuffing their bodies in a washer-dryer.
