It is a very candid interview, with many a Thai swear-word being explained, and may not be for the feint hearted. Nelson Howe amusingly recollects about the first time he was sworn at when he jumped the queue in order to flag a taxi. The Thai shouted after him, in English “Your father died”! He goes on to explain that Thai people have great respect for family, and a slur on someone’s family member is the height of insult.

The video clip, entitled “BKK 1st Time” is a little less than 5 minutes long. The clip has already received in excess of 750,000 hits on You Tube. Mr Howe is a philosophy teacher, now residing in New York, having lived in Bangkok for 3 years previously.

He also goes on to talk about the cultural differences between America and Thailand. For example, Thai children like to tease other children by chanting other children’s family names at them. Furthermore, he shares other expletives that he learnt whilst in Thailand.

“BANGKOK 1st Time” is broken down into many episodes of a 48 hour video compiled by Mr. Thanachart Siriphatthrachai. The intention is to promote his book “New York 1st Time”. The video chronicle’s next episode will be “The first time I saw a Thai ghost”, followed by “The first time I got into a number 8 bus”.
