Alzheimer’s: Marijuana Not The Answer

Previous studies that showed marijuana as being a tonic for improving the lives of people with Alzheimer’s could now be proved wrong according to findings published in the current issue of the journal of Current Alzheimer Research. The benefits of marijuana in stabilizing or reversing the effects have been challenged in a new study by researchers at the University of British Columbia and Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute.

New studies led by Professor of Psychiatry in the UBC Faculty of Medicine, Doctor Weihong Song, Canada Research Chair in Alzheimer’s Disease was the first to test those findings using mice carrying human genetic mutations that are the cause of Alzheimer’s disease.

Over a period of weeks mice that were affected with Alzheimer’s were given high doses of HU210 which was 100 – 800 times more potent than marijuana compounds. Their memories were then tested along with the mice that were given low doses. The mice treated with the HU210 faired no better than the untreated mice with the treated mice actually having fewer brain cells.

Doctor Song stated that Studies showed no biological or behavioral effects and more studies should be done before much hope can be placed in the benefits of Marijuana and Alzheimer patients.

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by progressive cognitive deterioration and is the most common form of dementia.
