Large amount of explosives stored in a local villager‘s house in northern China caused a massive blast claiming 43 innocent Chinese villagers, according to the Chinese Media. The explosion in Dongzhai village in Shanxi province also severely injured 28 casualties.

The accident happened after fire broke out in the house. Villagers who rushed to help were catapulted into the air in the explosion, Xinhua news agency reported.

Shanxi is a major coal-producing area and accidents are often blamed on improperly stored mining explosives.

The house was reduced to rubble and windows of surrounding buildings were blown out by the early-morning blast, an official told Xinhua. Thirty-seven people died at the scene and six more in hospital. More than 200 rescue workers were at the scene, the agency said. About a quarter of China‘s coal is produced in Shanxi province.

In April, at least 33 people were killed and buildings flattened in the province‘s Yuanping city when explosives stored by a former coal-mine owner blew up. Ten villagers were killed in a gold-mining town in Shanxi in a blast at a family dynamite workshop in June.
