Alleged Corruption Revealed in Sattahip Hi-Lo Gambling Bust

Marshals successfully busted a Hi-Lo gambling ring operating in Sattahip on Tuesday. The gambling rings orchestrator alleges that she had been paying local police in order to carry out her illegal business before offering the arresting officers a bride to forget the matter.

Sattahip, the 22nd of June 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: At approximately 10:00am on Tuesday, Sattahip Marshal Surachet Kaewkham and members from the Damrong Tham Center proceeded to investigate reports of an illegal gambling ring operating behind a house in Phlutaluang district.

Arriving at the scene officers observed a number of motorcycles parked in front of the residence, whilst a group of people could be heard cheering and shouting joyously behind the premises. Investigations revealed the group playing the illegal, dice based gambling game, Hi-Low. Moving to arrest the offenders, police were forced to roundup the group who had tried to escape when officers approached.

In total, all seven people, including the orchestrator of the operation, were arrested and the game board, dice and minor proceeds from the game were confiscated by police. During the investigation at the scene, the gambling organiser, Miss Kamonthorn Unjit [52] attempted to contact a member of the Phlutaluang Police Station who she alleged was protect her operation for a fee of Bt40,000 per month.

In addition to Miss Unjit’s allegations of corruption, she also attempted to bride the arresting officers by offering an amount of Bt40,000 baht to “forget the matter.”

An unnamed Sattahip Marshal spokesman revealed that Tuesday’s arrest had been part of the ongoing police operation to clampdown on illegal gambling syndicates operation in Pattaya and the surrounding districts.

All 7 of the arrested offenders will now be charged with participating in illegal gambling, whilst Miss Unjit has been charged with operating and participating in illegal gambling and attempting to bride a police officer/s.
