All Parties Urged to Solve Confrontation With Reason

BANGKOK, Aug 29 Supreme Commander Gen. Boonsang Niempradit on Friday called on all conflicting parties to act with self control and seek a common solution for the ongoing confrontation by using reason, saying they should learn from past bitter lessons of Thailand‘s conflicts.

Commenting on the State Railway of Thailand’s suspension of rail services in many routes because hundreds of its staff have taken sick leave in an apparent move to stage a strike, he said the incident should be likened to a car crash at an intersection, which causes traffic congestion and chaos.

One of the best ways to solve the problem is that both the government and the demonstration leaders must be self-controlled and reasonably seek a shared, common way out of the apparent impasse.

“The use of violence is unable to solve the problem,” Gen. Boonsong said. “We have to be conscious and aware of what we have learned in the past so we can use it to solve the problem.

“The military is now adhering to a democratic way and peaceful means,” he said. Gen. Boonsang affirmed that members of the Royal Thai Armed Forces are neither asserting divisive actions nor are they holding many different opinions about the current situation.

He reminded the conflicting parties of His Majesty the King’s past advice that it is useless for any parties to achieve victory at the expense of the well-being of the nation. Also, he stated, it is also more terrible for the country if victory is obtained amid divisiveness of the people in the country.

Regarding mounting concerns that the confrontation will escalate like the Black May incident in 1992, the supreme commander said: “We had a bitter lesson in the past and it should be a reminder that all parties must refrain from violence.

“All parties are Thais and should be aware that what they do must not cause damage to the country. They should turn to talks (dialogue) if they have any conflicts,” he said. (TNA)
