Algerian Caught With Fake ATM Cards Millions Stolen in Phuket and Pattaya

Pattaya Police and Chonburi Police arrested an Algerian man for using fake ATM cards to withdraw large amounts of money from ATM machines in Phuket and Pattaya.

Pattaya, July 6, 2011, (PDN), Pol.Col. Teerapon Jindaluang of Chonburi Provincial Police and Chonburi Police released the news of the arrest of Mr Abdelmalek Boukemara, 35, Algerian national, suspected of falsifying ATM cards. He was arrested in posession of 144 counterfeit ATM cards, 34 ATM cards, four baseball caps, and a wig at Chan Mansion in South Pattaya.


Pol.Col. Teerapon stated that the suspect who had been travelling back and forth between Thailand and France and had learned to speak Thai fluently. He used a pocket ATM skimmer to collect the data from the ATM and credit cards in order to transfer the data to the fake ATM cards and use them to withdraw money from the ATM machines in Thailand. The value of the stolen money amounts to circa 10 million THB. The suspect used the fake ATM cards to withdraw money from the ATM’s in Phuket and Pattaya where he stayed three months. Boukemara was arrested thanks to cooperation between the police and the banks. The banks supplied the police with the suspect’s image as he was withdrawing money from the ATM machines. He had disguised himself by wearing a wig and a cap. In addition, the suspect was found withdrawing money from the Siam commercial bank ATM machine at Pattaya Second Road in South Pattaya before he was arrested.

The suspect confessed that after withdrawing the money from the ATM machines, he transferred about 1 million THB to his account and the gang’s accounts in France day by day. Most of his victims were French. He was charged of producing fake ATM cards and is detained for legal prosecution.
