Against the Odds: Single, White Female takes on Pattaya

Expat women are certainly not the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of Pattaya.

“This really is a man’s town,” explains Kamilla, a Danish 20-something who arrived in Pattaya a few months ago. Between the town’s economic focus on male-dominated tourism and nightlife, and her busy work schedule, she’s found it difficult to find places, activities and people that match her interests.

The shops don’t have her size clothing. Without time to study, the language is a mystery. Even being served her coffee everyday at the office (instead of making it herself) is a slight bit uncomfortable for this independent woman. Life abroad does take some getting used to.

But she hasn’t folded yet. With so many great things about living in Pattaya (She loves the cheap, delicious food and great views of the ocean), she’s willing to go “all in” and give the city a shot.
She’s even found a place where she can indulge in her Formula 1 obsession. “I’m a Ferrai fan,” she explains “I live at Nova Park and they have an Irish Pub called Jameson’s. There are no ‘girls’, only girlfriends, and I feel comfortable there. It is a sports bar, so they show just about everything. I am already part of the ‘Formula 1-gang’ there.”

For Kamilla, and for many expat women, moving to Thailand has its ups and downs. Getting settled in a new place requires a mix of independence, flexibility, and, let’s face it, the admission that at some point you will do something that makes you look really stupid. But, hell, that’s part of the fun!

Most importantly, women need the ability to reach out to the new community around them. Who doesn’t need a new set of girlfriends to make life complete?

Luckily for Kamilla, a growing online network for women in Thailand is helping her, and thousands of other women like her, to connect with new people, gain valuable advice, and make the most of their time in their new home.

Even with the odds against her, Kamilla is hedging her bets on Chicky Net, the Social Network for Women in Thailand (www.chickynet.com). She’s already started a group on the site called “Pattaya Networking” and has connected with a number of Pattaya’s expat women.

Chicky Net was started by another expat woman who, similar to Kamilla, loved parts of her life in Thailand, but craved more chances to connect with like-minded people. Now the network, with members from around the country, is abuzz with questions about everything from apartment searches to zumba classes. Other Chicky Net tools include classified ads and blogs about life in Thailand. Beyond the online site, Chicky Net members can invite others to join activities that suite their interests. Activities on the site already include bowling, bike rides, spa days and cocktail meet-and-greets.

With the network set up to be driven by members’ initiative, the options for how Pattaya women can make use of Chicky Net are virtually limitless. With more Pattaya women joining each week, Chicky Net is helping to stack the deck in favor of expat ladies. With this support network, it easier for expat women to enjoy the thrills of living abroad but still have a reassuring connection with the familiar. Kamilla and the other women of Pattaya will surely like those odds.

Editors Note: Recently a group was created on the network for women living in Pattaya. When enough women join this group a sub network will be created for the Pattaya ladies as well
