Writing a dissertation may one of the most challenging tasks for any university student because it takes a lot of time and requires hard work. At the beginning of the longest and the most complex project in their academic career, lots of students are not really sure what they have to expect. When it comes to dissertation writing, it is crucial to manage your time effectively and avoid distractions that are inevitable for everyone who has to complete such a time-consuming task. Time Management

• Start as early as possible. There are two different approaches. Some people start writing after they have done the research and others write while still doing their research The both of them have their pros and cons so you may choose an approach that you think is the most suitable for you. Keep in mind that it generally takes a year to finish your dissertation.

A good thing is to make a presentation of your key ideas with PowerPoint and keep them like slides. Later, you can expand these ideas when writing your dissertation.

 

• Keep a dissertation journal to keep track of what you do. You may write it weekly or daily as you like. Write about your feelings about your work as well and write down your goals. In this way, you will have a better chance to achieve them.

 

Planning

• Set small measurable goals that not difficult to achieve. Don’t plan for the entire semester but set goals per week and do your best to achieve them. Never put your goals off. You may plan in terms of writing a certain number of pages per chapter.

 

• Plan to write for 6-7 hours a day and take short breaks every hour. Do sit staring at the screen but get up and walk for some time for a change.

 

• If you can, write in the first half of the day. Never procrastinate in the morning.

 

• Change physical environment. If you always work at home, you get used to it and become less productive. Try to write, for example, in the café or in the library. Work in the places where other people are working too to feel united and inspired. You should avoid places that are too noisy. Good instrumental or classical music is OK but songs with words are sure to distract you even if you don’t consciously realize it.
