ADHAHN‘S MOTHER PLEADS MITIGATING CIRCUMSTANCES.

The ongoing, totally traumatic influence of abuse, especially sexual abuse, are only just being understood on a general level. That it can totally warp a person’s psyche and exercise such a devastating effect on their subsequent life is probably one of the reasons why the Catholic Church in the US paid out such high rates of compensation, recently, to those unfortunate victims of the guilty members of the priesthood’s amatory advances.

In the case of 42-year-old, Terapon Adhahn, the Thai national with US residency, accused of at least two murders and the rape of two ypoung girls in Washington State, his mother has asked that her son’s early sexual abuse by his elder brother be taken into account as a mitigating factor in his ongoing trial. That remedial psychological treatment be adopted rather than punishment. Adhahn’s aunt further maintains “He is sick and needs help.”Reminiscing about her previously harsh life in Thailand, Adhahn’s mother, Pennsiri Bower, 66, recalls how she and Adhahn’s aunt learnt the dark secret behind the formerly unexplained behavior of her then 7-year-old son, who would suddenly break out into what they took to be histrionics; outbursts of hysterical screaming. They learnt subsequently that it wasn’t histrionics, but genuine anguish, having been repeatedly raped by his elder brother over a long period. As is so often the case, Adhahn had been in denial and only revealed his dark secret 29 years later!

Adhahn’s mother had been having a hard time trying to understand her son’s motivations and behaviour, till she learnt that he had been a victim of the sexual abuse. But she also had to add the further evidence of other extreme hardships that Adhahn had had to suffer as a young boy. His natural father, an alcoholic, had physically abused the boy and, subsequently, abandoned the family, leaving her as the only breadwinner for 5 kids.

Unable to cope, she, like many relatively young women in Thailand in similar abandoned circumstances and the country lacking the benefits of a welfare state, had relied upon the extended family nexus to provide. However, to add insult to injury, her mother-in-law, with whom the children had been sent to stay, had had a similar disposition to that of her son; she was apparently cruel-hearted and also effectively unable to provide adequately for her young relatives, only having a menial job. This necessitated, Bower’s continued financial aid, giving up virtually her entire earnings to support her offspring.

The circumstances of the family radically improved when Adhahn’s mother married a US serviceman and took the children out of penury. In 1977, they went back to the States and then to a military base in Germany where, for virtually the first time in his life, Adhahn led a normal life. He went through American school and, following graduation, was taken to Thailand to earn merit for the family by donning the orange robes of a Buddhist monk, after which he joined the US Army.

However, Adhahn’s mother complains that her son was always emotionally cold and relationally reserved; a common occurrence in abuse cases, where the emotional development is stunted. A diagnosis which was later confirmed in Adhahn’s psychological profiling by a mental-health evaluator who considered Adhahn lacked self-control man and suffered from a constellation of psychological, emotional and behavioural problems.

Adhahn later married and moved to Tacoma, where he saw more of his mother, living nearby until he moved to Fort Worth, in 1999 and lost touch. Additionally, the disclosure of a female relative, that she had been earlier raped by Adhahn led to further family estrangement as Adhahn, in late 1999, pled guilty to a lesser charge of incest, had to serve a two-month jail sentence and later underwent five years of sexual-deviation counselling.

Adhahn who was divorced in 1998, , moved back to Tacoma, in 2001 accompanied by a 12-year-old girl that friends had asked him to look after. Once again Adhahn was accused of rape over the four years that she and he lived together in Tacoma and Texas.

Adhahn’s mother is all too aware that the state does not look kindly upon those committing sexual crimes against minors. She consequently doesn’t hold out much hope that her son will be treated leniently in the forthcoming trials, initially, that of sexual assault on two girls and later as a suspect in other murders of young females.
