A day for Phuket’s children

Saturday (January 12) is the annual Children’s Day across Thailand, and plenty of organised activities are planned for Phuket and Phang Nga. Here are some of the major ones.

PHUKET – January 11,2013; The Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation (Orborjor) will have activities between 8 am and 4 pm at Provincial Hall, including fun rides, performances by local students at 10 am, a magic show at midday and a mini-concert with actors and actresses at 2:30 pm.

*Saphan Hin Sport Centre is the venue for an event organised by the Phuket City Municipality, from 8:45 am to 3 pm. This will include a musical concert and performances by local students, among other entertainment.

* The Royal Thai Navy base at Tab Lamu in Phang Nga will open its doors to families, with children allowed to climb all over large guns and other military equipment.

Local schoolchildren will put on a performance at 9:15 am, followed by a search and rescue demonstration at 10 am; desserts and games at 11:30, with 150 winners being invited aboard a warship; a parachute show at 1:30 pm; and a model airplane show at 2:30.

* On a gentler note, Phuket International Hospital will host a cute baby competition on Children’s Day.

Children aged between six and 10 months are eligible to enter. Entries are limited to 20, and so far 18 babies have already been registered, so the hospital has just two more places to fill.

The winner of the “cutest baby” prize will receive B1,500, and there are also other prizes up for grabs.

For more information contact the hospital on 076-249-400.

* Laguna Phuket will also put on its annual party for children, but in the evening. The Laguna Grove venue (at the turnoff to the old Laguna Beach Resort) will open at 3 pm.

Expect bouncy castles and other similar amusements. Performances including acrobatics, musical and comedy stage shows and a mini-concert will take place between 5 and 6:30 pm.

* Phuket Adventure Mini Golf is offering free adventure mini-golf games all day, from 11 am to 11 pm, to children up to 11 years of age. There will also be balloons and face-painting.

If past years are anything to go by, the island’s roads will be jammed as families drive around from one event to another – shopping malls and supermarkets also traditionally have events – so anyone planning to do some shopping is probably better advised to put it off for a day.
