The accident happened in a notorious travel blackspot, known for its dangers. The bus was traveling down a steep hill with numerous curves in the middle of the night in the Nadi district, Prachinburi province, 140 kilometres north-east of Bangkok. Apparently, the driver lost control while negotiating a sharp bend and it overturned after crashing into a road guard up a dirt ramp escape path and rammed into the hillside. Police suspect the bus could have suffered brake failure.

The driver was killed in the crash, along with 18 male and three female students from Kaset Techno Khon Kaen University, mostly aged between 20 and 28. The number of dead was expected to increase as most of the victims suffered severe injuries, Police Maj. Suchart Yaemsak reported.

Prachinburi Police Chief Major General Sanchai Chaiamporn said an accident investigation team was trying to determine the cause of the accident.
