Chiang Rai, the 2nd of February 2010 [Pattaya Daily News]: Renowned for it opening ceremony and unique displays of traditional Thai culture, the 2010 King’s Cup Elephant Polo tournament ensures it is a must-see event if you happen to be visiting Thailand’s Golden Triangle within the month of March this year.

The opening ceremony, during which Buddhist monks sprinkle holy water over both the players and animals, will be preceded by traditional style dance acts, hill-tribe villagers in authentic Thai dress and the elephant spirit men, known as Khru Ba Yai.

Last year the annual tournament saw 12 teams compete with riders from over 15 different countries, with this year’s tournament expected to be even bigger. The event takes place on the banks of the Ruak River which separates Thailand from Burma and is located in the Northern Province of Chiang Rai.

Swiss luxury watchmaker Audemars Piquet sponsors the famous event, with all proceeds going towards the Thailand National Elephant Institute charity.
