2 Filipino Women Swindled Money

Police have arrested 2 Filipino women who claimed that they were collecting money for the victims of the recent Haiyan Typhoon. The police suspected that there might be thousands of people cheated.

UDONTHANI – November 22, 2013 [Pattaya Daily News]; The immigration police of Udonthani province made a statement about arresting Ms. Minerva Makapili Bedana, aged 32 and Ms. Juana Espelita Hoyos, aged 23,who are Filipino, together with the exhibits of 2,070 THB and fake official cards of JC Society Foundation.

Pol. Lt. Col. Jetsada Yarngnork (Inspector of Udonthani Immigration Bureau) revealed that previously the officers were informed by JC Society Foundation indicating that there were using the name of foundation to solicit contribution in various tourist attractions in the eastern part of Thailand. The suspects were the 2 female foreigners who looked to the Thai people and they played guitar claiming that the money raised would go the the orphans or the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in Philippines.

From initial investigation, the officers perceived that the 2 defendants used to work at a church in Manila as missionaries; they then used fake information to raise money to assist the orphans. They came to Thailand in March 2013. They played musical instruments to solicit money in Bangkok then went to other tourist attractions in other provinces and would stay for 2 months at a time because they entered Thailand on tourist visas.

The defendants also confessed that they had come back to Thailand again at the beginning of November, 2013 and due to Philippines Typhoon they took this opportunity to solicit money from Thai people and foreign tourists totalling many hundreds of thousands THB. Now the police are inspecting international money transferring and are investigating it further.
