BANGKOK – September 21, 2012 [Pattaya Daily News]: in the late morning, a report of young people shooting guns at each other was received by Pol. Lt. Col. Santi Panyawong, detective inspector, Klong Tan police station.

He rushed to the scene at soi Ekamai 30, Nuanjit community, North Klong Tan, Wattana, Bangkok. Waiting for him were a group of young people who had been shot at.

Parked along a sidewalk nearby was a gray Toyota sedan, registration code Dor Or, 5480 Bangkok. The car’s body had been hit with two bullets, and its taillight was also hit by a bullet.

A motorcycled parked on the footpath had also been hit by a bullet that punctured its front tire. Two nearby homes were also hit by gunfire. The front door of one house, as well as an air compressor were hit by bullets.

Police recovered a total of 16 spent bullet shells: 11 shells were from a carbine, and 5 shells were from an 11 mm gun. Police also found fragments of 5 bullet heads, which were all kept for evidence.

Police questioned one of the shooting victims, Mr. Chatchai Wihokseri, age 31. He told police that the shooters were teenagers in soi Rongpoon, and are aquaintances of his. Mr. Chatchai said that he and his friends, along with several younger friends went out together in a group of about 10 people. They went to an entertainment place called Ruentalay in the Petchpraram area near soi Rongpoon.

The group was eating and drinking, and was about to return home. But then his younger friends and some of the teenagers got pissed at each other, because they were mockingly dancing the “Gangnam Style” video to get on each others’ nerves. When the group left the pub, Mr. Chatchai tried to reconcile the irate parties because he did not want them to be angry, since they all knew each other very well. So the group separated and left.

Later, Mr. Chatchai continued drinking with others at another place, but at about 6 a.m., the angry teenagers from soi Rongpoon came along by riding their motorcycles. They fired a gun at the sky to provoke them. However, Mr. Chatchai reconciled with them again so they left.

However, at 8 a.m., three of them came back riding two motorcycles. They began shooting at a car owned by Mr. Chatchai’s younger friend, which was parked nearby. Sitting in the car was its owner, Mr. Watcharin Gowan, age 27. He said that it seemed like the shooters were aiming at him and his friends who had gone out together.

Mr. Watcharin recognized all of the gunmen, because they were all his acquaintances. He identified them as Mr. Sonthaya, about 30 years old; his nephew Mr. Dam; and also a man nicknamed Mr. Beer. One of the gunmen used Carbine rifle, and the other two used 11mm pistols. They kept firing their guns repeatedly, even though they were all acquaintances.

Mr. Chatchai told police that he believed the younger members in the socializing group had gotten pissed off at the teenagers because they had been dancing “Gangnam Style” to get on each other’s nerves. Then they got really furious and came back to cause trouble.

Pol. Lt. Col. Santi said it should not be hard to catch the gunmen, since their names and appearances are all well known to the victims. He then co-ordinated with police detectives to follow up to arrest the suspects.

The “Gangnam Style” video was recorded by a star South Korean rapper named PSY. Since its July 15 release, “Gangnam Style” has been viewed 235 million times on YouTube. On September 20, it was recognized by the Guiness World Records as the most “Liked” video in YouTube history.
